O’Connor Violin Method Teacher Training Seminar, January 2010

ASTA MD/DC Chapter and George Washington University hosted the first-ever teacher training for Mark O’Connor’s new Violin Method. The event took place from January 16–18, 2010, in Washington, D.C. Thirty-two teachers plus a few students attended, as O’Connor kicked off the proceedings on January 16 with a 90-minute lecture/demonstration, and performed later that night at the Kennedy Center with his Hot Swing Trio.

Pam Wiley, with help from her daughter, Sadie de Wall, led the teachers for the 3-day training in the use of the two books of the violin method. They used video, CD’s, and a live student demonstration (students of Dorée Huneven) to illustrate how the sequenced pieces could be used pedagogically.

The event was generously sponsored by Brobst Violin Shop, and was administrated by MD/DC President Dorée Huneven.

There was such enthusiasm for the new method that MD/DC members decided to do another Teacher Training Seminar next year.

Dorée Huneven has been using the new O’Connor Violin Method in her teaching since August, 2009. At a Studio Teachers Meeting on May 10, 2010, she explained how she has worked with this method to blend it with the Suzuki and ASTACAP needs of her two studios.
