ASTACAP Exams Held March 4, 2012

The ASTA Certificate Advancement Program (ASTACAP) winter exams were held for the third year in a row at the Lutheran Church of Saint Andrew, Silver Spring, on Sunday, March 4, 2012.

A total of 79 students—77 violinists and 2 violists from the studios of 11 teachers took the exam.

The following teachers were represented: Klara Berkovich, Julianna Chitwood, Lorraine Combs, Dorée Huneven, Slavica Ilic, Jean Provine, Judy Shapiro, Alessandra Schneider, Judith Silverman, Leslie Smile, and Chienmo Wu. The teachers who entered students served as monitors.

The tasks of organizing the entire event were split between Dorée Huneven and Julianna Chitwood.

The following levels and numbers of the students taking the exams were:

Foundation:    4
Level 1:    15
Level 2:    23
Level 3:    7
Level 4:    9
Level 5:    6
Level 6:    8
Level 7:    6
Level 8:    1
Level 9:    1

The expert examiners were Emily Campbell, Lynne Denig, Jeffrey Howard, and Hilde Singer.

We encourage all teachers who have not yet tried the ASTACAP program, especially viola, cello, bass, and harp teachers, to visit and observe the exams, to talk to teachers who have used the program, to read all about it, and to consider enrolling their students.
