Studio Teachers Meeting, January 2012

by Jean Provine

Studio Teachers Meeting, 10:30 a.m., January 17, 2012, at Cathy Stewart’s house.

About ten local teachers grew a few inches after working with Alexander Technique teachers Jan Baty and Cynthia Mauney. While this was only a basic introduction, the two will be doing a workshop on February 11, 2012, in Herndon, Virginia, and a more inclusive course later, also in Virginia. (www.thevillagegreen.net).

While most of us imagined Alexander Technique was about “sitting up straight,” we learned it is more about balance of the head from the back on a naturally curved spine, and awareness of the way we should move to maintain that important balance. We also experimented on each other to experience physically touching students in a slow, gentle manner to help them feel this balance; and practiced guiding arm motions from the hand. Everyone felt a calmness and yes, even a rise in height after the session! We continued the conversation around the yummies on the luncheon table. Many thanks to both of these ladies for donating their time.
